Repeat Prescriptions

Patients taking repeat prescriptions can make a request online providing they have a password and provided that the medication is authorised as a repeat medication on the right hand side of your prescription - please contact reception on the procedure.

The most efficient procedure for patients taking repeat prescriptions is to order online and collect from your nominated pharmacist usually within 2 working days - but please read our policies below.

Nowadays there are excellent alternative ways to request prescriptions which are safer and much easier to process. They are very easy to use, and the request enters our prescribing system immediately. If you currently use e-mail to request your prescriptions you will need to change this, and start using one of two alternative apps.

The NHS app is the easiest one to register with. You will need a photo of your passport or driving license to register, and you can register from home: www.nhs.uk/nhs-app/about-the-nhs-app

Patient Access app is the second option and offers similar services, however, you will need to show your passport or driving license at the surgery: www.patientaccess.com

You can also still request a repeat prescription by ticking the items that you require on the right hand side of the paper prescription and posting it in the prescriptions box at the surgery. There is a box at the front of the surgery when we are closed.

We now transmit nearly all prescriptions electronically to your nominated pharmacist without the need for you to visit the surgery . This is extremely efficient, saves paper, reduces risk of fraud and allows tracking of the prescription and is now our preferred method of issuing all prescriptions. It also saves the need for you to visit the surgery to collect the prescription. A very limited number of prescriptions still need to be printed

Medication Reviews

A medication on your repeat medications list allows you to order the medication without having to see a doctor until a predetermined review date when you will be required to consult the doctor to ensure that the medications you are taking are still appropriate for your medical condition. Only the doctor can decide which medications that you are taking will be added to your repeat list as for some items your clinical records need to be reviewed every time you request that medication.

Please note that if the doctor feels that your medical condition needs to be reviewed, they may request that you are seen in surgery prior to authorising a repeat prescription.

Early requests for prescriptions will be rejected and you should not normally request medications more than 5 days before they are due.

Changes to prescribing of over the counter medicines

Did you know that your local NHS spends £15m a year on prescribing medicines that are available to buy at the pharmacy?
Following national guidance from NHS England, we’re asking GPs not to prescribe these medicines*, including for conditions such as coughs, colds, headaches, mouth ulcers, travel sickness and mild toothache.
Your GP will not generally give you a prescription for over the counter medicines for a range of minor health concerns. Instead, over the counter medicines are available to buy at your local pharmacy.
The team of health professionals at the pharmacy can offer help and clinical advice to manage minor health concerns and if your symptoms suggest it’s more serious, they’ll direct you to the help you need.
For further details, including a list of conditions the guidance applies to, please take a look at our leaflet here. You can also contact us at nwlccgs.communications.nwl@nhs.net
